There has been a slowdown in mortgage lending in recent months, according to figures from the Council of Mortgage Lenders and the British Bankers Association. Data from the Council of Mortgage Lenders showed borrowing for home loans was down by 12% in September, and whilst lending was up 2.5% on the previous year, this was the lowest annual increase for two years. Figures from the British Bankers Association showed a similar trend, whilst also displaying a slowdown in unsecured lending on personal loans, overdrafts and credit cards .
Whilst it should be acknowledged that there tends to be a dip in mortgage lending in the months of August and September, the current reduction is more than double than the typical decline. It may be a while before the current slowdown reverses, despite expectations for the Bank of England to cut its rates early next year.
