European Union Agree New Deal for Loan Conditions

Mon, 14 Jan 2008

Under a new deal agreed by European Union states, the conditions under which personal loans of between £150 and £55,000 are borrowed will be altered slightly. Perhaps the most significant change is that the EU’s member states will now be allowed to decide their individual policy over compensation for loan companies when borrowers want to repay early, rather than having to abide by a European law on the matter.

Although that represents the most significant change brought about by the new deal, it is unlikely to affect consumers heavily. More noticeable for consumers, however, will be that they won’t be able to obtain a copy of the draft credit agreement for free before signing it. Such a right for borrowers had been proposed, but has been withdrawn at the request of the assembly.
